The best little cycling club on the Bellarine, or anywhere for that matter, Barwon Heads Cycling Club is all about riding bikes, enjoying a coffee with great friends, creating opportunities for the community to experience the joys cycling and sharing a laugh – not necessarily in that order.
We’re compatible and companionable, we’re not competitive (well most of us aren’t) nor are we tragic middle aged Tour de France wannnabes (well, again, not all of us!). We love riding bikes but above all, we are about community.
On the road, as at Annie’s Providore after the ride, we’re friendly, chatty and the focus is on fun. We can certainly push some kms out occasionally and there’s often a sprint for the Cadel line but nobody ever gets criticised for sitting at the back of the bunch. No matter what your level or aspirations, if you want to enjoy cycling on the Bellarine, you will fit right in.
From modest but ambitious beginnings in 2005, the club has evolved as any club is likely to do. Numbers have grown and shrunk, cafes have gone in and out of favour and seasons have passed.
We want the Club to be able provide the community with the opportunity to participate in and enjoy cycling at all levels and we are especially committed to giving juniors an option to get into the sport. Who knows, we may end up unearthing another cycling superstar for Barwon Heads!
However, some things will always remain constant. While we have other rides, our 5.45am ride from the Barwon Heads CFA to Breamlea and back to the café is the cornerstone of what we are about. Great people enjoying enjoying each other’s company and the simple pleasure of riding a bike in the most beautiful surrounds. If you can think of a more scenic, ocean-side weekday ride anywhere in Australia we’d love to know as we believe we ride some of the best routes that the coast and the country can possibly provide.
But why not join us one day and discover for yourself what we are all about.
